The tower was an old, abandoned observatory. The doors were locked, but that was no problem for Jerom. He pushed the heavy oak doors open as if they were made of cardboard.

Inside, it was dark. Candles flickered, casting long shadows. Suddenly, the mocking laughter echoed through the hall.

"Hahaha! You think you can catch the Glunderende Gluurder?"

The thief appeared on a high walkway above them. He wore his signature grinning mask.

"You have a choice," the Gluurder shouted. "Leave now, or face my trap!"

"We're not leaving," Suske said defiantly.

The Gluurder pulled a lever. The floor beneath their feet gave way! Suske, Wiske, and Lambik slid down a chute, landing in a basement filled with piles of stolen goods—the loot of the entire village. suske en wiske de glunderende gluurder lezen exclusive

"Help!" Sidonia screamed. She had followed them secretly and was now trapped in a cage in the corner.

The Gluurder stood at the top of the chute, looking down at them. "Enjoy your stay! You are now part of my collection!"

But he had forgotten one thing: Jerom.

Jerom hadn't fallen for the trap. He stood at the top of the chute, glaring at the thief. The Gluurder tried to run, but Jerom leaped up, grabbing the walkway and pulling himself up in one fluid motion.

"No more peeking," Jerom grunted.

Wiske, however, had found something. Near the fireplace, she picked up a small, shiny object. It was a button, but not a normal one. It bore the crest of a mysterious antique shop located in the neighboring city.

"Aha!" Wiske exclaimed. "Our Gluurder isn't a phantom. He buys his equipment somewhere."

The next morning, the trio (including Jerom, the super-strong prehistoric man, who had just arrived for a visit) traveled to the city. They tracked the antique shop to a dusty, forgotten alley.

The shop owner was an old, shriveled man who claimed to know nothing. But while Jerom distracted the owner by accidentally breaking a heavy iron safe (just by leaning on it), Suske and Wiske snooped around the back.

They found a ledger. It listed sales of "special climbing gear" and "soot-proof cloaks." The buyer was anonymous, but the delivery address was a dilapidated tower on the outskirts of the city.

De Glunderende Gluurder (literally “The Beaming Peeper”) is not your typical time-travel romp. This story leans heavily into suspense and psychological mystery. The plot revolves around a sinister, grinning figure who seems to be watching the heroes from the shadows, causing strange events and paranoia. Without spoiling anything: the “gluurder” has a unique, unsettling motivation that ties into the theme of unwanted observation. It’s darker and more atmospheric than average, making it a standout for older readers (think 10+).

Jerom cornered the thief on the roof of the tower. There was nowhere to run. The Gluurder tried to use his climbing gear to swing away, but Lambik, who had climbed out of the basement through a window, caught the rope mid-air. The tower was an old, abandoned observatory

"Gotcha!" Lambik cheered.

They pulled the villain back onto the roof. Wiske stepped forward.

"Let's see who you really are," she said.

She reached out and pulled off the white mask with the grinning face.

Underneath was the face of the wealthy Mayor of the nearby town!

"The Mayor?" Suske gasped. "But why?"

It turned out the Mayor had amassed a huge debt due to a gambling addiction. Using his knowledge of the town's security systems, he had created the persona of the "Glunderende Gluurder" to steal enough valuables to pay off his creditors, hoping to blend in by pretending to help with the investigation during the day.
