To understand the install, you must understand the software. By mid-2007, mapmaker IceFrog had taken over development from Guinsoo (who later made League of Legends). Version 6.26 was a transitional build.
The Hero Roster: This version introduced the Spiritbreaker (Barathrum) rework and the classic Gambler (a removed hero). It also featured the original Silencer, Stealth Assassin (Riki), and the pre-nerf Terrorblade.
The Meta: There was no "jungle position 4" yet. The meta was simple: 5v5, two top, one mid, two bottom. Roshan dropped a simple Aegis of the Immortal (no cheese). The shop did not have secret item queues.
Why install this version today? Because emulators (like RGC or old Battle.net private servers) still run tournaments for "Classic DotA." Furthermore, many LAN centers kept 6.26 because it was stable and didn't require the later "AI" engine tweaks that broke replays.
| Problem | Solution |
|--------|----------|
| Map doesn’t appear | Place it in Documents\Warcraft III\Maps\Download\ (not Program Files). |
| Frozen Throne not recognized | Reinstall TFT into same folder as RoC. |
| Error: "Map file too large" | Use patch 1.26 (supports larger maps). 1.21 and below fail. |
| Green/black textures | Run war3.exe as admin + Windows 7 compatibility mode. |
| No sound / lag | In options, reduce sound quality, disable 3D sound, set graphics to OpenGL (add -opengl to shortcut target). |
| Desync on LAN | Ensure every player has the exact same map file and same WC3 patch. |
You cannot simply download a file called "dota 126" and double-click it. DotA is a map file (.w3x), not a game. You need the engine.

Patch 1.26 still supports GProxy++, LAN bridges (ZeroTier, GameRanger), and classic virtual LAN software. It avoids the "CD-Key in use" errors common in later Battle.net versions.
Congratulations! You have completed a Warcraft III The Frozen Throne Dota 126 install.
