Important: The WTRT-8501 does not support over-the-air (OTA) updates. You will need a Windows PC and a USB programming cable (typically a Kenwood-style 2-pin to USB cable).

Most modern Wise Tiger WTRT8501 units support Over-the-Air updates. This is the preferred method as it requires no USB drives or computer intervention.

Let’s be realistic. Wise Tiger isn't Asus or Netgear. They are an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) brand. The WTRT8501 runs a heavily modified version of OpenWrt or a standard MediaTek SDK (Software Development Kit).

Here is the hard truth: Automatic over-the-air (OTA) updates are rare on this model.

You must become proactive.

The interface varies depending on the specific software version, but look for one of the following paths in the top or side menu:

  • Enter your Username and Password.
