Inside, the tavern was familiar, yet uncanny. The layout was the same: the bar to the left, the jukebox in the corner, the shadowy staircase leading up to the VIP lounge. But the textures were higher resolution. The grain of the wood bar was deep enough to catch a fingernail. The smoke in the air didn't just float in static loops; it swirled and dissipated with the airflow.
"You're late," a voice rasped.
Elias turned. Sitting at the far end of the bar was Kael. In the previous patch, Kael was a low-poly model with a jagged haircut that clipped through his collar. Now, his features were smooth, almost hyper-realistic, but his eyes held the same tired, pixelated glint of an NPC who had seen too many playthroughs.
"Traffic was bad," Elias said, sliding onto a stool. "The loading times on the interstate bridge are brutal since the update."
Kael grunted, sliding a glass down the bar. It didn't float or glitch; it slid perfectly, spinning to a stop in front of Elias. "Snatsgames really went all out on the fluid dynamics," Kael muttered. "Took them long enough."
Elias took a drink. It tasted like pixels and regret, but with a new, spicy aftertaste. "So, what’s the word? Is the patch stable?"
"Stable?" Kael laughed, a sound that distorted slightly before the audio engine corrected itself. "That depends on your definition. The 'Twist' is different now. In v0.14, the world just turned upside down. Gravity reversed. Simple. Effective."
"And now?"
Kael leaned in. The lighting shifted dynamically, casting deep shadows across his face. "Now, it’s psychological. The changelog said they fixed the 'Narrative Dissonance' bugs. Means the world doesn't just twist physically, Elias. It twists your history. It rewrites your quest logs."
Elias felt a cold shiver. He pulled up his internal menu—a gesture that felt slower, more deliberate than the instant point-and-click of the past. He navigated to his Journal.

Elias stared at his hands. They were trembling. The high-definition fingerprints seemed alien to him. "Why would Snatsgames do that? Why update the lore?"
"To make it hurt more," Kael whispered. "Higher resolution textures, higher resolution consequences."
Suddenly, the floorboards creaked. Not a sound effect, but a structural groan. The neon light from the window outside shifted from red to a violent, bruising purple.
