To run this on a modern rig, you need to set your GPU to compatibility mode for DirectX 9. Even then, you will encounter the famous "Blue County Crash Loop." In v015, there is a specific corridor in the "Moth Motel" (Room 204) that triggers a 100% crash rate on NVIDIA 30-series cards and above.
Feti, in their characteristic dry humor, released a README_CRY.txt with the patch notes:

However, the community discovered that if you underclock your RAM to 2133MHz, the crash doesn't happen. Instead, the screen freezes, the audio loops for 33 seconds, and then a developer texture appears: a low-resolution JPG of a real suburban house in Ohio.
