Crusade distinguishes itself from other fan-games (like Smash Flash 2) by using a unique engine that feels like a hybrid between Melee and Brawl.

These characters are banned in some friendlies for a reason.

One of the historical criticisms of large-scale MUGEN or fan-game projects is that the characters feel disjointed. Characters imported from different games often move with different physics, breaking the flow. The "CMC" (Crusade Modding Community) builds, specifically v9, tackled this issue head-on.

The v9 build is celebrated for homogenization. The developers didn't just throw characters in; they re-coded, balanced, and smoothed out the animations to ensure that Crusade feels like a cohesive game rather than a messy mashup.

Note: The Crusade team has since moved on to Crusade v1.0 (a ground-up rebuild), but that’s still in alpha. For a complete, playable, and fun experience right now, CMC+ v9 is the gold standard.
