Gladiator films had been done before (Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator), but never like this. The use of green screen, stylized blood, and kinetic camera movement (courtesy of director Grady Hall) creates a "graphic novel" feel that is unique to this series.

The series premiere opens in Thrace, where the Roman legion, led by Legatus Gaius Claudius Glaber, seeks an alliance with a Thracian tribe to defeat a rival Greek army. After Spartacus leads a successful attack on the Greeks, Glaber betrays the agreement and orders the Thracians to be enslaved. Spartacus leads a revolt, killing several Romans and fleeing with Sura. Glaber captures them, sentences Sura to slavery, and condemns Spartacus to death in the gladiatorial arena.
Before his execution, Glaber’s wife, Ilithyia, suggests a crueler fate: Spartacus is sent to the ludus (gladiator training school) of Batiatus in Capua. There, he is stripped of his identity and forced to fight for his life. He refuses to submit, even challenging the champion Crixus.
