The "Shadows" series began as a personal project—an attempt to fix the unrealistic "digital crush" common in early ray-tracing engines. The first five versions (v01 through v05) were solid, but flawed. Users reported that while v03 had great edge detection, it lacked mid-tone separation. v05 offered speed but sacrificed resolution. Then came v06.
Most digital shadows are simply black with reduced opacity. That is optically wrong. Real shadows take on the color of the ambient light. Shadows v06 by vicxlose better includes a proprietary Subsurface Shadow Diffusion map. If you drop an object onto a red carpet, the shadow isn't black—it is a deep, desaturated maroon. Previous shadow generators created a fixed hardness. If you rotated a leaf or a piece of text, the shadow edge remained uniform, looking like a sticker on a page. v06 introduces dynamic edge blurring. The script within the preset reads the source image's Z-depth (distance from camera) and adjusts the penumbra accordingly. The result? Shadows that look cast, not pasted.
