Build 40 lacks the shader optimizations of newer versions. If you experience stutter:
Step 1: Open Steam and navigate to your Library.
Step 2: Right-click on Project Zomboid and select Properties from the dropdown menu.
Step 3: Click on the BETAS tab. This is where Steam manages legacy versions.
Step 4: In the "Beta Participation" dropdown, scroll through the list. You will see several branches:
Step 5: Select "legacy40". Steam will immediately begin downloading the necessary files. This is the "upd" (update) process in action – Steam redownloads and replaces the newer game files with the Build 40 version.
Step 6: Wait for the download to complete. The download size is approximately 1.8GB – far smaller than Build 41’s 5GB+ footprint.
Step 7: Launch Project Zomboid. You’ll know you’re successful when the main menu background shows an older art style and the version number in the bottom-right corner reads Version 40.43.
