Version 0.3 is live. And yes, the title isn’t a joke.

If you’ve been following the playtests, you know exactly who Karl is. If you haven’t… well, buckle up. This update stings.

Title: Princess Reconquista Version: 0.3 (Public/Test Release) Codename: "Sorry Karl"

If you are a completionist or a lore enthusiast, v0.3 is mandatory. The mechanical depth of the Grief-to-Power system is the best the mod has ever seen. The writing—particularly the “Sorry Karl” event—is haunting, reminiscent of Spec Ops: The Line or Disco Elysium’s darker moments.

However, if you are a min-maxer who hates narrative railroading, be warned: v0.3 forces you into the “Sorry Karl” path if you want the Princess’s unique endgame units (the Tears of the Fallen tank division, for example). There is no “spare Karl and still win” route. The devs have confirmed this is intentional: “The Reconquista is not supposed to feel good.” Princess Reconquista -v0.3- -Sorry Karl-

For those not in the Discord: Karl was our lead playtester’s favorite character. A lowly pikeman who, in v0.1, could survive the entire reconquista if you treated him well. In v0.2, I added a branching path where Karl could betray you if you burned a certain village.

In v0.3, I went further.

There’s now a scene—fully voiced in the test build—where Princess Elara has to order Karl’s execution by her own hand. The line that breaks everyone? He doesn’t beg. He just says:

“You promised you wouldn’t become them, Your Highness.”

And then the game auto-saves. No warning.

The darkness descended upon Azura in the form of a powerful sorcerer, Malakai, who sought to conquer and destroy all that was good. His armies marched across the land, leaving behind a trail of devastation. It was then that Princess Reconquista found her true calling. Armed with a magical sword passed down through her family and a determination that could move mountains, she set out to reclaim her homeland.
