The core of the device is a 64-element microphone array. These aren't randomly placed; they are positioned in a specific geometry on the sphere. Why 64? Because spatial resolution requires data.
With a standard stereo setup, you can maybe tell if a sound is coming from the left or the right. With a 64-element array, the V720 can calculate the time difference of arrival (TDOA) of sound waves hitting each individual microphone with microsecond precision. This allows the software to triangulate the exact X, Y, and Z coordinates of a sound source in a 3D space.
