For most teenagers, summer means sleeping in, pool parties, and a well-deserved break from homework. But for 16-year-old violinist Melody Marks, this summer meant something entirely different: intensive scales at 8 AM, masterclasses until dusk, and the life-changing experience of the Greenwood Summer School for the Arts.
Melody, a soft-spoken sophomore from Asheville, North Carolina, was one of only 50 young musicians selected nationwide to attend the prestigious four-week program. We sat down with her to hear about the triumphs, tears, and transformative power of her summer “boot camp” for the soul. melody marks summer school
Melody Marks Summer School is expanding rapidly. While originally a single-campus pilot in the Pacific Northwest, the program now operates in over 40 cities, including:
Session Dates: Typically run in three 2-week blocks throughout July. Families can sign up for one block or all three.
Cost & Financial Aid: The program costs between $350 and $650 per session depending on the track. Need-based scholarships are available, funded by the "Marks Foundation for Creative Learning." Early bird registration (before March 15th) includes a free "Learning at Home" kit with rhythm instruments and workbooks. By: The Harmony Herald Staff August 15, 2024
Pros:
Cons:
Q: Does my child need to play an instrument to attend? A: Absolutely not. The Melody Marks Summer School uses musical concepts (rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics) as teaching tools. No prior musical training required. Session Dates: Typically run in three 2-week blocks
Q: What if my child is behind grade level? A: The program excels at remediation. The small group format and multi-sensory approach are ideal for students with learning differences, including dyslexia and dyscalculia. However, the school does not currently offer full-time special education aides; families should consult the director before enrolling.
Q: Is there homework? A: No. The philosophy is that summer should remain restorative. All learning happens during the six-hour school day.
Q: What about sports or other summer camps? A: Many families split their summer: four weeks of Melody Marks and four weeks of traditional camp. The school offers flexible "alternating week" enrollment for this purpose.
Q: Where are the campuses? A: As of 2025, the only official locations are Portland (OR), Austin (TX), and Burlington (VT). Dr. Marks has announced plans for a Denver campus in 2026. Beware of imitators using the "Melody Marks" name; always check the official directory.
