Master Costello is no typical wise old mentor. He drinks heavily, mocks the player’s choices, and has a secret agenda. Yet his dialogue contains some of the most poignant lines in the game. His signature speech, delivered halfway through the narrative, begins:

"Unschuld ist die Lüge, die wir uns erzählen, bevor die Welt uns zeigt, wie sie wirklich ist."
("Innocence is the lie we tell ourselves before the world shows us how it really is.")

This line became iconic among the small but devoted fan base following the game’s initial fan translation efforts.


In March 2020, a new team called Übersetzungskollektiv Unschuld (Translation Collective Innocence) announced their intention to finally complete a full German patch. The team consisted of five members: mastercostellodasendederunschuldgerman patched

The project took 28 months. By June 2022, they released version 1.0 – a complete German translation patch for the original PlayStation disc image (ISO).

But the story didn’t end there. Early users reported three specific bugs involving Master Costello:

Despite critical acclaim in Japan (Famitsu score: 34/40), Das Ende der Unschuld remained untranslated for German audiences. English fan translations appeared in the early 2000s, but German fans faced two major hurdles:

Between 2001 and 2018, at least four German fan translation projects started and failed. The primary reason? Master Costello’s dialogue. His speech patterns mix Viennese German, dark humor, and philosophical jargon – a nightmare to localize naturally.

One anonymous translator wrote in 2009:

"Costello spricht wie ein betrunkener Kafka. Ich gebe auf."
("Costello speaks like a drunk Kafka. I give up.")


Die Originalfassung hatte etwas Wichtiges verloren: nicht nur ein Kapitel, sondern die Intention. Figuren handelten ohne Gewicht, Motive waren flüchtig wie Nebel. Costello erkannte, dass das Problem nicht technischer Natur war — es war moralisch. Seine Protagonistin, Lena, musste nicht bloß die Wahrheit erfahren; sie musste sie verdienen.
