Mame 0.235 Rom Set -

Alternate versions of a parent game. Clones are usually tiny (a few MB) because they only contain the differences from the parent—different text, difficulty settings, or region code. Example: sf2uk.zip (UK version) requires sf2.zip to be in the same folder if you are using a merged set.

  • Parent/clones: Many arcade games use a parent ROM with one or more clones (regional or revision variants). The 0.235 set defines parent entries and clone relationships; missing parent ROMs can make clones fail.
  • CHDs: Some games require CHD files (large disk images). These must be placed in the appropriate subfolders defined by MAME 0.235.
  • BIOS and device files: Certain systems require BIOS ROMs or device dumps; those must match the expected versions for 0.235.
  • Compatibility: Using ROMs from different MAME releases often causes CRC/checksum mismatches or missing files; always use the matching set for guaranteed compatibility.
  • Use a ROM manager like CLRMamePro or RomVault. These tools read a "MAME 0.235 XML dat file" (available from the MAME dev site) and verify every ZIP. They will tell you exactly which ROMs are missing or corrupt.

Do not use the latest MAME. Go to the official MAME website or a trusted archive and download the 0.235 binary for your OS (Windows, Linux, macOS). mame 0.235 rom set

First, a crucial clarification: A "ROM set" is not a single file. It is a collection of thousands of individual ZIP files, each containing the dumped Read-Only Memory (ROM) chips from a physical arcade PCB (Printed Circuit Board).

Arcade games are not like console games. A single arcade cabinet might contain a "parent" game (e.g., Street Fighter II: The World Warrior) and several "clone" versions (e.g., Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Turbo, or region-specific variants like Dash). MAME requires a specific folder structure and file naming convention to run these. Alternate versions of a parent game

Why version numbers matter: Emulators are reverse-engineered over time. A ROM that worked in MAME 0.100 might be missing sound samples or crash entirely in MAME 0.235 due to a more accurate CPU emulation that requires a newly-dumped sound chip. Conversely, a ROM that works in 0.235 cannot be assumed to work in 0.200 because the emulation logic changed.

Thus, the MAME 0.235 ROM set is a specifically curated snapshot of the MAME project from that date. Every ROM in that set is guaranteed to be compatible with the MAME 0.235 executable. Parent/clones: Many arcade games use a parent ROM

ROMs and CHDs are typically copyrighted. Possessing or distributing them may be illegal unless you own the original hardware or have explicit permission. This text does not provide sources for obtaining ROMs or CHDs.

Not beginner-friendly – Requires understanding of parent/clone sets, BIOS, and emulator configuration
Large download – ~65 GB for a split set, smaller for merged/non-merged
No CHDs – Many 3D/hard drive games (e.g., NBA Showtime, Gauntlet Legends) require separate 150+ GB CHD collection
Some games still broken – Protected or poorly dumped titles may glitch or not boot
