Frustrated, he almost closes the window. Then he hears it—her voice, soft as a confession. He doesn't need the English. He remembers every word. Descent into Hardship: After news arrives that Nino has been killed, Malèna's situation worsens. She is falsely accused of adultery, loses her father in a bombing, and is eventually forced into prostitution to survive as the town's social fabric collapses under the war.

The Climax: When the Allied forces liberate the town, the local women violently attack and publically humiliate Malèna, shearing her hair and beating her. She flees the town in disgrace.

Return and Resolution: Surprisingly, Nino returns—having been a prisoner of war rather than killed. With Renato's help, he finds Malèna. In a powerful final scene, the couple returns to Castelcutò.
