The whaling schooner Pilgrim is on its way back to San Francisco. On board are Captain Hull, Dick Sand (the novice sailor), Mrs. Weldon and her son Jack, and the cook Negoro. While at sea, they encounter a sinking ship. They rescue five Black survivors – Tom and his four friends. However, the ship has no survivors left, so they take them aboard. While hunting whales, Captain Hull and the entire crew of sailors (except Dick Sand) are killed in a whale attack. Mrs. Weldon, her son, the rescued Black men, Dick Sand, and Negoro remain on the ship. Brod nasrće na stijene

Now, Dick Sand, aged 15, must become captain.

Dick Sand doesn't know how to navigate the ship across the entire Pacific Ocean. He relies on the ship's charts. However, Negoro (the cook) secretly sabotages the ship. He breaks the navigation tools and moves markers on the map. Because of Dick’s inexperience, Negoro tricks him into sailing toward the coast of Africa instead of America.
