Clarice graduates from the FBI Academy. During the celebration, she receives a phone call from Dr. Lecter, who is now a fugitive in the Bahamas. He assures her that he has no intention of coming after her, joking, "The world is more interesting with you in it." He does, however, mention that he is "having an old friend for dinner"—implying he is about to kill and eat Dr. Frederick Chilton, the asylum manager who had tormented him.
The film ends with Clarice watching the phone, realizing the monster she helped catch has been replaced by the monster she set free, but the screams of the lambs have finally fallen silent.
