Apple introduced several A12-specific security features that kill the custom IPSW concept:

On Reddit or iPhoneDevWiki, you may find references to "custom IPSW for A12" from the iOS 12–13 era. These were typically rootFS remount IPSWs used with checkra1n (which never supported XR) or the short-lived blackbird exploit. None of these work on modern iOS.
