What makes Part 1 compelling is Alice’s duality. She is presented as an "everywoman" thrust into extreme circumstances, but flashes of a forgotten past surface: muscle memory for combat, an unnerving familiarity with the restraints’ locking mechanisms, and a single whispered word—"Red."
