A surviving NOAA experimental heat index map from July 14, 1995, hand-drawn in red marker, shows a “DANGER – EXTREME” zone covering 750,000 km². Margins contain a scribbled note:

“This exceeds chart. Add 10°F to all readings after 2pm.”

The color legend stops at “130°F HI.” Chicago exceeded that for six hours.
