If you have a USB-to-TTL serial adapter, you can connect to the DVR's internal motherboard header (usually labeled TX, RX, GND).
If the defaults failed, you are likely looking at a screen that says "Login Failed" or shows a "Hash Code." This is the most common modern security feature for Hi-Sharp units. You can also use the Hi Sharp DVR
When you enter the wrong password multiple times, the DVR will lock you out. On many Hi-Sharp interfaces, a string of characters (numbers or letters) will appear on the screen, often labeled as a Serial Number, MAC Address, or Hash Code.
This code is the key. It is a mathematical representation of the current time or the unit's hardware ID. Because the algorithm is known, developers have created "Password Calculators" that take this code and spit out a temporary master password.
How to use this method:
Note regarding the Date: Some older Hi-Sharp algorithms rely on the system date. If the DVR has a dead CMOS battery, the date may have reset to 1970-01-01 or 2000-01-01. If your password calculator isn't working, try setting the date in the calculator to match the date shown on the DVR screen (if visible).
Alternative: On some Hi Sharp boards, there is a small circular battery (CR2032). Removing this battery for 5 minutes also resets the BIOS and password.
