Un sábado por la mañana, cinco estudiantes de secundaria completamente distintos se presentan a un castigo ejemplar en la biblioteca de la ficticia escuela Shermer High School (Shermer, Illinois). Les ordenan escribir un ensayo de mil palabras sobre "quién creen que son", bajo la mirada severa del director Vernon (Paul Gleason).

Lo que comienza como insultos y desprecio se transforma, a lo largo de ocho horas, en confesiones íntimas, bailes improvisados, un porro compartido y la revelación de que todos llevan la misma máscara para sobrevivir al infierno social del instituto.
Imposible hablar de El club de los cinco sin mencionar el tema central de Simple Minds. La canción Don't You (Forget About Me) es, para millones, el himno de la amistad fugaz y la melancolía adolescente. El famoso plano final con el puño en alto de Bender (Judd Nelson) mientras suena el sintetizador se ha convertido en un icono pop tan reconocible como el cartel de Tiburón o la silueta de E.T.
Curiosamente, la banda Simple Minds no quería grabar la canción porque la consideraba demasiado comercial. La grabaron en una sola toma, y el resto es historia. El sencillo llegó al número 1 del Billboard Hot 100.
