A Good Day to Die Hard is reviled. Rightly so, if you want a good film. But as the final chapter of the saga completa, it is devastatingly coherent. McClane travels to Russia to rescue his estranged son, Jack (Jai Courtney), only to discover Jack is a CIA assassin. The plot is nonsense. But the subtext is clear: McClane has nothing left but blood. He destroys Chernobyl. He kills dozens. And at the end, he and Jack share a silent, broken nod. No hugs. No tears. Just the acknowledgment that the family curse has been passed down. The final shot is McClane limping into a gray Moscow morning. He is not heroic. He is not happy. He is simply too hard to kill.
