Manga Volume 2 Full | Doukyuusei

If you are reading Doukyuusei Volume 2 Full (as opposed to the serialized chapters), you are getting the definitive experience. The collected volume includes the beautiful cover art and bonus illustrations that Nakamura is famous for. Pay close attention to the margin doodles and the author’s notes—they often contain hilarious insights into the characters’ inner thoughts, like Kusakabe admitting he actually has no idea how to play the song he keeps humming.

The 2016 anime film adapts only the content of Volume 1 and a small part of Volume 2 (up to the school festival). This Volume 2 contains the entire jealousy arc and the first real “almost breakup” – all of which is not in the film. If you loved the movie and want to know what happens next, you absolutely need this volume.

If you only watched the Doukyuusei anime movie (which covers Volume 1), you have only seen the prologue. Volume 2 (Sotsugyousei) is the heart of the story.

In the second volume, the initial excitement of their first kiss and relationship establishment settles into the daily routine of high school life. The stakes become higher as the characters face their first real obstacles as a couple. doukyuusei manga volume 2 full

1. The Graduation Photo Arc One of the standout moments in the middle of the series involves a class photo. Sajou is often self-conscious and tries to hide his smile or stay in the background due to his glasses and stoic appearance. Kusakabe, who loves Sajou's smile, encourages him to be himself. This volume highlights Kusakabe's growing protective nature and his desire for Sajou to have confidence.

2. Dealing with Distance and Time As they settle into their relationship, the difference in their personalities becomes more apparent. Kusakabe is the "cool rocker" who is socially adept, while Sajou is the "honor student" who is stiff and anxious. Volume 2 explores how they bridge this gap. It isn't about drama or fighting; it is about the quiet, domestic moments—studying together, walking home, and learning how to communicate.

3. Foreshadowing the Future Volume 2 begins to plant the seeds for the sequel, Sotsugyousei. The reality that they will eventually have to make decisions about university and the future starts to loom. The volume ends on a note of security, solidifying that while they are an unlikely pair, they work well together.

If Volume 1 of Asumiko Nakamura’s masterpiece Doukyuusei (often translated as Classmates) was about the electric, hesitant spark of first love, then Volume 2—titled Sotsugyousei (Graduation) —is about the quiet, terrifying, and beautiful work of keeping that fire alive as the world changes around you. Released as the direct continuation of the story of Hikaru Kusakabe (the loud, popular slacker) and Rihito Sajo (the quiet, grade-obsessed perfectionist), Volume 2 shatters the illusion that finding love is the end of the story. It proves that, in reality, it’s only the beginning.

Warning: Spoilers for Doukyuusei Volume 1 and Volume 2 (Sotsugyousei) ahead.

  • Hikaru Kusakabe:

  • Asumiko Nakamura’s art style is distinctively "elongated" and dreamy. In Volume 2, the art evolves slightly to be more expressive than Volume 1. Hikaru Kusakabe:

Doukyuusei Volume 2 is a slow, deliberate exhale after the gasp of Volume 1. It won’t punch you in the gut with tragedy, but it will make your chest ache with nostalgia for the quiet afternoons of your youth.

    Who should read it?

Rating: 9/10 Minus one point only because I desperately need a third volume to see where these two go next.
