The stage is bathed in a harsh, clinical light. Shadows are stark.

We are looking at the "Street." An invisible line separates the "Maison" from the "Farm."

GRACE (20s, exhausted, wearing a dust-covered dress) walks down the center of the stage. She mimes wiping sweat from her brow. She stops at a chalk outline on the floor: THE BUTCHER’S SHOP.

She mimes opening a door. She does not step over the line immediately; she waits, looking "inside."

GRACE
> Mr. Aaron? I’ve finished the sorting. The apples are boxed.

AARON (50s) sits on a wooden crate, reading an invisible newspaper. He doesn't look up. He turns a page that isn't there.

AARON
> Took you long enough. The truck leaves in an hour.
GRACE
> I know. I was... I was slowed down. My leg.

Grace rubs her calf. She forces a smile. It is a smile of submission. dogville screenplay pdf

AARON
> (Finally looking up) > We all have burdens, Grace. You wanted to stay. In Dogville, you earn your keep.

Aaron reaches out to an invisible counter, picks up a small parcel wrapped in brown paper, and tosses it toward Grace. She catches air.

AARON (CONT'D)
> Scraps. For the dog.

Grace looks at the invisible parcel.

GRACE
> Thank you.

She turns to leave. She mimes opening the door. Before she steps out—

AARON
> Grace.

She freezes. The audience can see the tension in her back, even though her face is hidden.

AARON (CONT'D)
> Ma Ginger says you were talking to the truck driver yesterday. Warning him about the roads.
GRACE
> (Turning slowly) > I was only making conversation. Being friendly. Like you taught me.
AARON
> Friendly is one thing. Loose lips are another. We don’t know who is looking for you. Or who you might invite back here.

Grace looks down at the chalk lines at her feet.

GRACE
> I would never bring danger here. You know that. You’re my friends.

Aaron stares at her. A long beat. He smiles, but it doesn't reach his eyes. Disclaimer: Always respect copyright laws

AARON
> We’re your family. That’s why we have to be careful. Now go. Before the bell rings.

Grace nods. She steps over the chalk line into the "street." She walks toward the "Maison."

As she walks, the lighting shifts. The stage dims, creating a spotlight on GRACE. The other actors freeze in their "houses."

NARRATOR (V.O.)
> It was around this time that Grace began to realize that goodness, when it is enforced by debt, looks very much like a prison. And a prison without walls is the hardest one to escape from. For there is nowhere to climb, and nowhere to break through.

Grace stops in the middle of the street. She looks up at the imaginary sky (the rigging of the theater).

She opens her mouth as if to scream, but no sound comes out. She closes her eyes.

From the darkness of stage right, a sound: A low, rumbling ENGINE.

Grace’s eyes snap open.

She looks toward the "Entrance" of the town. Headlights (stage spotlights) cut through the darkness, blinding her. She shields her eyes.

She doesn't run. She stands still.

The lights grow brighter.

CUT TO BLACK.
