The story goes that in 1960, Jung was approached by the director of Aldus Books to write a book for laypeople. Jung initially refused, feeling too old and tired for such a project. However, shortly after, he had a vivid dream. He dreamt that instead of sitting in his study addressing scholars, he was standing in a public square, addressing a crowd of ordinary people who were listening intently. Jung took this as a sign from his own unconscious that he had one final duty: to explain his discoveries to the world.
