New readers should not start here. The plot of Volume 8 relies heavily on understanding the curse’s rules, the supporting cast, and the emotional history between Vald and Halvir from Volumes 1–7.
Longtime fans of Crimson Spell have hailed Volume 8 as one of the strongest entries in the series. Praise centers on:
Criticism is minimal but includes some readers feeling that certain side characters (e.g., the knights from Vald’s kingdom) are underutilized. Additionally, the volume’s darker emotional tone may feel heavy for those who prefer lighter yaoi fare.
Volume 8 of Crimson Spell picks up in the aftermath of the harrowing confrontation with the demon prince Astaroth. Prince Vald, the cursed swordsman whose demonic transformation is triggered by stress and injury, continues his desperate search for a way to break the spell that plagues him. Alongside his steadfast companion, the powerful sorcerer Havi (Halvi), Vald faces not only external monsters but the growing internal battle between his human heart and the demonic bloodlust threatening to consume him. crimson spell volume 8
In this volume, the stakes rise to a new level. Havi’s mysterious past comes into sharper focus as the truth behind the cursed sword and the demon realm’s interference is slowly unveiled. Vald and Havi journey deeper into forbidden territories, encountering allies who may not be trustworthy and enemies who wield psychological torment as brutally as any blade. A pivotal revelation forces Vald to confront the possibility that breaking the curse might require the ultimate sacrifice—either his soul, or his bond with Havi.
Meanwhile, the emotional and physical intimacy between Vald and Havi deepens, providing moments of intense vulnerability amidst the chaos. The volume doesn’t shy away from the darker implications of their relationship: Havi’s protective instincts clash with Vald’s stubborn pride, and a shocking betrayal leaves Vald isolated and fighting for control—not just of his demon form, but of his own will.

Volume 8 is widely considered the turning point of the entire series. It answers questions posed in Volume 1 (What is Ruven?) while raising even larger ones. It also delivers the highest “heat level” in terms of mature content—but crucially, every intimate scene in this volume is earned. There are no gratuitous panels; each kiss and embrace serves to heal the trauma inflicted by the plot.
Vald has often been portrayed as the stereotypical “noble hero”—brave but a little naive. In Volume 8, he is forced to become a strategist and a monster. His acceptance of the demon within is a powerful metaphor for embracing one’s shadow self. A key monologue in the middle of the volume sees Vald confess: “I was afraid of the monster inside me. But the monster is the only reason I could save you. So I will no longer be ashamed.” This is the moment Vald transforms from a cursed prince into a true anti-hero.
With the revelation that the sword Ruven is a piece of a demon god, and Vald’s curse now fully integrated into his soul, the stage is set for a final arc. Yamane has hinted in her afterword (included in Volume 8) that the series is approaching its conclusion, but not to expect Volume 9 for at least another 18 months.
