However, the experiment comes with a cost. The villainous Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving), the leader of the Nazi deep science division HYDRA, has disfigured himself with an early version of the serum. Schmidt possesses a cosmic cube called the Tesseract, which he uses to develop advanced weapons.
The film follows Steve as he becomes a symbol of hope, rescues his best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), and leads a team of Howling Commandos to destroy HYDRA. The climax is heartbreaking: Steve crashes a plane carrying WMDs into the Arctic ice to save New York City, waking up 70 years later in present-day S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, setting the stage for The Avengers.
