For decades, mental health was taboo. The Malay phrase "sakit jiwa" (sick soul) carries a heavy stigma. However, the recent "Pelan Tindakan Kesihatan Mental" (Mental Health Action Plan) by the Ministry of Health is trying to change this. Covid-19 acted as a catalyst, forcing Malaysians to acknowledge burnout and anxiety.

The government has rolled out the "Malaysia Sihat Sejahtera" agenda, banning sugary drinks in school canteens and mandating calorie labeling on restaurant menus. However, the individual ultimately holds the fork.

In the pursuit of rezeki (livelihood), sleep is often the first sacrifice. "Tidur lewat sikit tak apa" (Sleeping a little later is fine) is a common refrain.

Health is not uniform across Malaysia. A massive gap exists between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak).
