Tamils - a Trans State Nation..

"To us all towns are one, all men our kin.
Life's good comes not from others' gift, nor ill
Man's pains and pains' relief are from within.
Thus have we seen in visions of the wise !."

Tamil Poem in Purananuru, circa 500 B.C

Cs-f21: Akai

The most striking feature of the CS-F21 is its form factor. Unlike the wider, two-cassette decks common at the time, the CS-F21 utilizes a vertical, "up-front" loading mechanism. The cassette is inserted with its face pointing outward, allowing for a very slim and tall profile. This design made the unit highly portable and easy to fit into tight spaces, such as small shelves or vehicle consoles, making it a popular choice for travelers and journalists.

Visually, it sports the classic Akai aesthetic: a brushed metal faceplate, tactile rectangular buttons, and prominent dial controls. It features a built-in handle, reinforcing its identity as a "carry-along" unit rather than a stationary piece of hi-fi furniture. akai cs-f21

The most significant feature of the CS-F21 is its direct-drive capstan motor. In the early 80s, most decks in this price range used belt-drive or inexpensive DC servo motors. The CS-F21 uses a hall-effect direct-drive motor. Why does this matter? The most striking feature of the CS-F21 is its form factor

However, do not confuse this with a dual-capstan system. The CS-F21 uses a single capstan and pinch roller. The take-up reel is belt-driven from a secondary motor, which is a common point of failure we will discuss later. However, do not confuse this with a dual-capstan system

The CS-F21 sits in the "2-head, 2-motor" category. It isn't a three-head monster, but it punches above its weight.

Many assume "Akai = GX," but the CS-F21 uses a Hard Permalloy head. These are laminated magnetic cores.
